Postcards from Berlin, Salzburg, Prague and Dresden
A few quick updates, full dispatch coming soon.
BERLIN, Germany — Hi everyone! I’m writing from the train back to Dresden after a lovely long weekend in Berlin with Alli. Right now, I’m enjoying a Coke Zero and the sound of someone singing and playing guitar really poorly in my train car.
Officially, I was in Berlin this weekend for the Fulbright Germany Thanksgiving Celebration, which was last night. But of course, I turned that into an excuse to go shopping and café hopping all over Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Prenzlauer Berg.
I’m really getting my Berlin fix lately. I’ll be back in exactly one week with friends and family who are visiting me for Thanksgiving. And before we go to Berlin, we’ll spend some time in Dresden. I’ve definitely been away too much lately, so I’m excited to spend this coming weekend in town.
For those of you wondering about my Berlin FOMO — I definitely still feel it, especially when I visit. (It doesn’t help that every time I see my Berlin friends, they tell me I should move as soon as I can.) But lately I’ve been really enjoying my life in Dresden. And it definitely doesn’t hurt that I’ve found a new place to live. (Refer to this post for a look at where I’ve been staying for the past two months.)
I’m worried I’ll jinx it, so I don’t want to write too much before I officially move in. But I had dinner with the flatmates last week, and we really hit it off. The apartment is cozy, but it has everything I need (including a kitchen with an oven). It’s also in a great location on Jordanstraße in Äußere Neustadt. Stay tuned for updates on my crosstown move, which should be happening on or before December 1!
Over the past few weekends, I’ve been traveling with old and new friends. Last weekend, I stayed near Salzburg with Alli, Alice and Erica, one of Alli’s friends in Berlin.
The weekend before that, I was in Prague with Sofia and Alice.
Both were great trips in different ways. It was particularly nice in Austria to get out into the countryside. Our Airbnb was a guesthouse on an operational farm about 20 minutes outside of Salzburg. There was a goat barn directly next to where we parked our rental car, and the kitchen window looked out over a cow pasture.
I’m also realizing I never updated the newsletter about my half marathon, which I ran on October 27. I finished with a time of 2:01:09. I was hoping I’d run it in under two hours, but that just leaves me a goal for next time. I think my next race will be the Berlin Half Marathon on April 6 (if I can make it through training this winter).
Anyway, that’s all for now. Thanks for reading, and like I said earlier, expect a dispatch soon! ▣
